It is said that the major chip manufacturers, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung, Apple and Huawei will release new SoC in 2016, but most of the 2016 new phones are using 2015 released processors, Snapdragon 820, Exynos 8890, Helio X20 and Kirin 950 while Apple A9 is just used for Apple iPhones. So we would like to review and compare the processor benchmarks of Snapdragon 820 vs Exynos 8890 vs Helio X20 Vs Kirin 950. In contrast with the frequent launch events of the 2016 new smartphones, the phone processor industry is very peaceful, because one processor or chip can be used in many smartphones. However, this does not mean that the competition between the processor manufacturers is not fierce.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Processor

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 features a 64-bit Quad-core CPUs that can be clocked at up to 2.2 GHz. This quad-core processor is based on 14nm FinFET tech, and it would be twice faster and power efficient compared to Snapdragon 810. Snapdragon 820 is also the most expected and used processor for many 2016 new phones, see the Snapdragon 820 specs review and smartphones list.

Samsung Exynos 8890 (also known as Exynos 8 octa 8890)

Samsung Exynos 8890 is also an octa-core 64-bit 14nm processor based on ARMv8 tech. It is the first chipset from Samsung that features Modem and Application Processor in one chip. It was rumored as Mongoose M1. It’s 8 cores CPU that are divided into 2 parts; first 4 cores are customer made and another 4 are based on ARM Cortex-A53. Generally, the Samsung processors are used on most of the Samsung smartphones and latest Samsung Galaxy S7 / S7 Edge has a version using this chip.

MediaTek Helio X20 MT6797

MediaTek Helio X20 is the first deca-core of tri-cluster 20nm 64-bit chipset; 2 cores x Cortex-A72 @ 2.5GHz + 4 cores x Cortex-A53 @ 2.0GHz + 4 cores x Cortex-A53 @ 1.4GHz. The first smartphones with Helio X20 is expected to arrive in early 2016, see the MT6797 Helio X20 smartphones list. Its variant Helio X25 Turbo MT6797T is also confirmed to release last month in Shenzhen, and the first MT6797T smartphone – Meizu Pro 6 is just announced on April 13.

Huawei’s Hisilicon Kirin 950

Hisilicon Kirin 950 is an octa-core 64-bit 16nm CPU from Huawei company. Its octa-core is divided as Quad-core 2.3 GHz Cortex-A72 and quad-core 1.8 GHz Cortex A53. It is also a powerful chipset, but it would be the least powerful chip in 2016. Even the advanced and developed edition Kirin 955 is just improved a bit and cannot meet the public’s expectation. The company’s new flagship Huawei P9 dual camera smartphone adapts the latest Hisilicon Kirin 955.

Part II. Processor Scores on AnTuTu Benchmarks: AnTuTu benchmarks: Snapdragon 820 vs Exynos 8890 vs Helio X20 Vs Kirin 950

Recently, an image from AnTuTu Benchmarks shows the top 10 processors based on the performance cores and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is the top 1 on the list. Now we make the AnTuTu benchmarks of the four processors: Snapdragon 820 vs Exynos 8890 vs Helio X20 Vs Kirin 950 and you can see the benchmark scores of the four chips below:

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 has still the best performance of the four processors with a score of 136383 points, following is the Samsung Exynos 8890 with a score of 129865 points and Huawei Hisilicon Kirin 950 is the third with a score of 92746 points, the MediaTek MT6797 Helio X20 is the last one, only with a score of 85692 points. Of course, the processor scores on AnTuTu benchmarks are not fixed and always flexible depend on the specific conditions.

Part III. Processor Scores on Geekbench Benchmarks:

However, the situation is a bit different for the processors scores on the Geekbench benchmarks performance. See below scores of the four processors: Snapdragon 820 vs Exynos 8890 vs Helio X20 Vs Kirin 950 on Geekbench benchmarks.

Single-Core Performance Score:

In single-core performance on Geekbench benchmarks, Samsung Exynos 8890 has the highest score of 2294 points that is based on leak. Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 has the second highest score of 2238 points, MediaTek Helio X20 is the third with a score of 2193 points and Huawei Kirin 950 is the last with a score of 1877 points. The small difference is difficult to identify from the Geekbench benchmarks image, as the multi-score performance of each processor on Geekbench benchmarks has much higher points.

Geekbench benchmarks: Snapdragon 820 vs Exynos 8890 vs Helio X20 Vs Kirin 950

Multi-Core Performance Score:

However, things change a lot in the multi-core performance on Geekbench benchmarks. The MediaTek Helio X20 ranks top 1 with a score of 6965 points, and the Samsung Exynos 8890 has a second highest score of 6908 points, the Huawei Silicon Kirin 950 is the third with a score of 5633 points and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is the last one of the four processors, only with a score of 5174 points.

The four processors have different performance on different benchmarks standards, the scores on AnTuTu benchmarks are really different from the Geekbench benchmarks. But it is absolutely that the four processors, Snapdragon 820 vs Exynos 8890 vs Helio X20 Vs Kirin 950, have a good performance among the most of the chipsets.
