Now this Chinese phone maker is seemed to go after high end smartphone market. On MWC 2016, Xiaomi released its 2016-year flagship smartphone, Xiaomi Mi 5, which adopts the new Snapdragon 820 processor. It is said that Xiaomi Mi5 uses 10 “black technologies” to be the most-worthy Xiaomi devices ever. Let’s check the review of Xiaomi Mi 5 with specs and price, in China, India, UK and other countries where the Xiaomi Mi 5 can work, and find out what 10 “black technologies” it has and whether it is worthy high end price or not.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Review: price and availability

The Xiaomi Mi 5 will be available in three different editions: the basic 32GB model, an enhanced 64GB flavor with faster processing, and an exclusive ceramic back edition with a whopping 128GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM, with an exclusive price of 2699 RMB. The other two editions are priced at 1699 RMB for basic 32GB model and 2299 RMB for enhanced 64GB device. Xiaomi Mi5 is available in China only right now. But some Indian news reported that the price of Xiaomi Mi 5 for Indian market is now revealed, priced between Rs 20,000 and Rs 27,000 at the time of its launch. Right now, Xiaomi Mi 5 is available for presale on some Chinese online stores, like GearBest, for users who want to buy a budget Chinese smartphone, and the shipment to US, UK and other European counties is also available.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Review: design and display

It feels very light when holding Xiaomi Mi 5 in hand, only 129 grams with a 5.15-inch big touch screen, which takes up to 73.14 screen-to-body ratio. Xiaomi Mi 5 features an IPS LCD FHD capacitive touch screen up to 401 PPI of 1920 x 1080 pixels, with one of the top “black technologies” that makes uses of 16 LED lights to provide more highlights with less power consumption. On the top side of Xiaomi Mi 5 is the earphone jack and infrared port for controlling smart devices at home. And the Type-C USB port is at the bottom side. The back cover is worth mentioning with a whole 3D glass, and the slim curved edges from 3D glass back shell to metal middle frame makes Xiaomi Mi 5 look much slimmer with a thickness of 7.25mm. Xiaomi Mi 5 is an ultra-slim smartphone and a narrow bezel phone as well. The 16MP rear camera with dual-LED flash locates on the top left corner. The camera has many “black technologies” and we will introduce them later in Xiaomi Mi 5 camera review.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Review: hardware and performance

As we said, Xiaomi is a Snapdragon 820 smartphone, sporting the newest Snapdragon 820 quad core processor with the Adreno 530 GPU, which is called one of the top 10 “black technologies” used in Xiaomi Mi5. However, even Snapdragon 820 is the fastest chipset right now, it cannot be looked as a “black technology” of Xiaomi Mi 5, as there are many smartphones sporting Snapdragon 820 processor.

Below is the benchmark performance of Xiaomi Mi 5 with Single-Core score and Multi-core score.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Benchmark Performance

The basic model of Xiaomi Mi 5 has a common memory, with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, as most mainstream big storage Android smartphones, but comparing with Vivo Xplay 5 Elite’s 6GB of RAM, Xiaomi Mi 5 is quite common, even the exclusive ceramic edition with 4GB of RAM.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Review: camera

Xiaomi Mi 5 sports a Sony IMX298 camera sensor for the 16MP primary camera, which is said using several “black technologies”, like 4-axis OIS to offer latitudinal and longitudinal image stabilization and corrects shake in close shots and DTI pixel-to-pixel isolation. OIS cannot be counted as a black technology for Xiaomi Mi 5 technically, as many Snapdragon 820 smartphones like HP Elite X3 and HTC One M10 also uses OIS in their cameras. The rear camera of Xiaomi Mi 5 supports PDAF auto focus, phase detection auto focus, OIS touch focus, face detection, HDR, panorama. There is a 4MP front camera for selfie with 80 degree viewing angle and real-time beautify function.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Review: battery

Xiaomi Mi 5 adopts a non-removable 3000mAh battery for normal use and standard battery life. Xiaomi Mi 5 supports quick charge 3.0, which is one of the 10 black technologies but actually is one technology of the Snapdragon 820 chipset. The two-sides available design of Type-C USB port adopts thinner design with stronger power transmission and faster charging speed. And most of the high-mid end smartphone uses this Type-C USB, like Elephone P9000.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Review: connectivity

Xiaomi Mi 5 supports dual SIM dual standby and 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Dual-Wi-Fi (2.4G/5G), A-GPS, GPS, NFC, LTE-4G, 3G and GSM. Xiaomi Mi5 boasts of supporting universal networks in China for China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom. Here are the 4G, 3G and GSM network frequencies of Xiaomi Mi 5: LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500); 3G network bands: HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz; 2G network bands: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz. How do you think the ten “black technologies” of Xiaomi Mi 5? Generally, phone makers will make full uses of the newest technologies used in the smartphone to draw users’ attention, but most of the 10 black technologies of Xiaomi Mi 5 comes from the Snapdragon 820 SoC and many others are used commonly in many high end smartphones from top phone brands like HTC, Samsung, Sony and more. Considering its affordable price, Xiaomi Mi 5 is just a mid-range smartphone with a mid-range price, cannot compete with international brands with its specs and price.
